JAVIER MARUGÁN

SPAIN

Prof. Javier Marugán is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Water Analytical Laboratory (LAGUA) at URJC. He has been visiting researcher at the Institut für Technische Chemie (Hanover University, Germany), Instituto de Desarrollo Tecnológico para la Industria Química (Santa Fe, Argentina), Plataforma Solar de Almería (Spain), School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials (Newcastle University, UK), School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (Harvard University, USA) and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA).

He has been working in photochemical processes for more than 25 years, especially in the synthesis of catalytic materials, their application to the photocatalytic oxidation of pollutants and the inactivation of microorganisms, and the modelling and scaling-up of photochemical processes. His significant experience on the mechanistic modelling of disinfection processes and radiation transport inside photoactive systems has been the focus of participation as leader investigator of URJC in the European Projects PCATDES, WATERSPOUTT (https://waterspoutt.eu), PANI-WATER (https://paniwater.eu) and HYSOLCHEM (https://hysolchem.eu), and as coordinator of the Water JPI European Project MOTREM Water JPI (https://motrem.eu) and the REWATERGY project (https://rewatergy.eu), an MSCA-ITN European Industrial Doctorate network where three academic and three industrial partners trained 8 PhD students developing industrial prototypes for different applications in the water-energy nexus.

He has supervised more than 15 PhD theses, and his scientific outcome has been published in more than 15 book chapters, more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed international JCR journals and more than 300 contributions to scientific congresses.
